ALPHA LIPOIC ACID

Alpha lipoic acid is a fatty acid whose effects are comparable to those of vitamins. It can be produced by plants, animals and the human body. Its use is versatile. It also has strong antioxidant properties that neutralise free radicals.

Alpha-lipoic acid can affect metabolism. It causes an increase in energy while reducing appetite.

Alpha-lipoic acid is found in muscles and organs, where it converts carbohydrates into energy, but if supplemented in sufficient quantities to obtain a surplus, it can have antioxidant properties – acting throughout the body and enhancing the effects of other antioxidants: such as vitamin C and vitamin E.

Alpha lipoic acid is naturally present in the environment. This compound can be supplied to the body through the consumption of certain plants, such as spinach, potatoes and broccoli, and meats. Some of the plants and meats that are sources of alpha lipoic acid are:

• green peas,
• Brussels sprouts,
• rice bran,
• spinach,
• beef brains,
• beef spleen,
• beef kidney,
• beef heart.

It is worth noting that the amount of alpha lipoic acid contained in food is usually insufficient to have a positive effect on the body.
